About Tenerife
The Canary Islands are made up of 13 islands, one of which is Tenerife. Only seven of the islands are populated, as the other six are too small. The Canary Islands were claimed by the Spanish back in the 15th Century, and Tenerife has been a tourist attraction since the early 1960’s. To accommodate the influx of visitors Sofia airport was built on the south coast, back in 1978, and numerous hotels and apartments were built, especially on the South coast, where the climate was warmer, Playa de las Americas was born. |
Tenerife has a reputation as being crowded and calamitous. This is true to say, especially on the busier coastal resorts such as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, but there is much to do and see inland. Many areas have been classed as a National Park, and therefore further development of the tourist trade has slowed. The National Park of Garajonay, in La Gomera, for example, is dedicated to conserving the native flora and fauna and wildlife of Tenerife.
Inland, Tenerife is a walker’s paradise. Isolated trails, forged from the volcanic flow of the Pico del Teide, can be walked and climbed for days without the interruption of human interaction. This is truly a place to ‘get away from it all’.
If you prefer to travel by car, the ICONA (the Spanish conservation agency), has strategically placed picnic areas for public use. These overlook the best views that Tenerife has to offer, so don’t forget to take your camera, and to stop wherever you see a set of picnic tables!
For those who opt for the traditional beach holiday, then Southern Tenerife is the place to be. Costa Adeje, Santa Cruz, Los Gigantes, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas all offer sun, sea and sand. These are 24-hour resorts that offer bars, eateries, discos, entertainment, shops and accommodation. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of busy streets and restaurants, that’s exactly what you will find. The area is a metropolis for sun worshippers, and the beaches are often very busy, especially through the summer months.
